This tutorial will show you how to use the lathe tool quickly and effectively.

Start by drawing the profile of the shape you want to create. I am making a vase, you can copy my shape if you like.

Next add the Lathe Modifier to it. Under Parameters check Weld core . If your shape is black on the outside check Flip Normals. Under Align click the Max button.

This changes the axis around which the line is rotated around. If you didn’t get the shape you wanted try clicking the Min or Center button.

Now add a Shell Modifier, this will create a perfectly even thickness for the vase. Set the Outer Amount to zero and the Inner Amount to something like 5. You will notice that the vase doesn’t look very smooth.

To fix this click on the Lathe Modifier and increase the Segments. It’s still not perfect though. Click on Line at the bottom of the Modifier Stack. Expand the Interpolation drop down menu and check Adaptive.
