This is a great plug-in created by by Thomas Luft that grows ivy with the click of a button. All you have to do is adjust the settings if you like and when you start it you can see it growing in front of your eyes.

It will send out splines from a single point that will wrap around objects and grow up them. It even comes with a material for the leaves or you can use or own objects.
